Jet Lag

Jet-Lag

Jet-lag can take you out. But there are several ways to combat it before your trip and once you arrive. Studies show that it can take a full 24-hours for each time zone you travel through. For example; I live in Colorado and traveling to Italy I pass through 8 time zones. So if you find you are affected by jet lag and do nothing to combat it you could be feeling those effects for 8 days! Some of the easiest ways to help minimize jet lag include the following:

  • Take melatonin once you are at your destination to help sleep through the night (1mg is enough if you don’t use this on a regular basis)
  • Depending on if you are traveling east or west start going to bed earlier or later a few day to a week before your trip
    • Traveling west start going to bed later
    • Traveling east start going to bed earlier
  • If traveling on a long flight try to sleep and eat on the schedule of your destination
  • Drink plenty of water and if possible avoid alcohol and caffeine during travel (easier said than done – I mean who doesn’t love free wine on overseas flights?!)
